Innovate UK’s Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) helps innovative SMEs to collaborate and explore global markets, accelerating business growth.

Each GBIP, focused on a specific market and technology or sector area, involves a cohort of up to 15 ambitious innovative UK businesses looking to grow and scale globally.  The programme aims to help businesses explore future opportunities and to better understand what is needed to be successful on the global stage.

The GBIP provides detailed market knowledge, cultural insight, and introductions and connections, opening doors that SMEs might find difficult to do themselves.  Each business is supported by an Innovate UK Business Growth innovation and growth specialist to help maximise the potential of being part of the programme and beyond.  

 

Who is the Global Business Innovation Programme for?

In order to be eligible for the Global Business Innovation Programme, you must be a small or medium sized company based in the UK.  We are looking for businesses with the ambition and commitment to grow and scale globally with the need to better understand how to tackle global markets, to build partnerships and collaborations, and to explore future opportunities.  A senior person from the company needs to commit to being involved in all stages of the programme.

The three stages of the programme are as follows:

 

Get ready

Get ready for the market includes a workshop in the UK with the cohort being briefed by sector and market experts on, for example, cultural aspects of conducting business in that country, the management and protection of intellectual property, and potential opportunities.  Participants receive help to find potential partners and collaborators and to better articulate the value proposition of their business.  

Visit the market

Visiting the market provides opportunities to explore at first hand the market, attend pre-arranged meetings to meet potential partners and collaborators, site visits, and a range of activities tailored to the needs of the market and thematic area.  

Exploit the opportunity

Exploiting the opportunity is arguably the most important aspect of the programme. To maximise the opportunity, participating companies work with an Innovate UK Business Growth innovation and growth specialist, receiving bespoke one-to-one support to help develop and implement an action plan.

 

Selection for the Global Business Innovation Programme

The Global Business Innovation Programme operates on a competitive basis and businesses selected are required to actively participate in all three stages.

 

What is the cost of the Global Business Innovation Programme?

The cost to participate in the programme is the time commitment of a senior person from the business.  The commitment includes working with an Innovate UK Business Growth innovation & growth specialist, attending the Get ready workshop (2 days), visiting the market (1 week), and attending the Exploit the opportunity workshop (1 day).

Innovate UK will fund and organise group flights, group accommodation and group in-market travel for successful applicants. One senior representative from each company will be funded.

On acceptance to the programme a commitment fee of £1000 will be obtained from each participant, which will be refunded on completion of the full activities and agreed action plan. Non-completion after formal acceptance may result in forfeiting some or all the commitment fee.

GBIP in Kolkata & Chennai, India - Urban Systems

Why India? India is booming, with a vibrant innovation ecosystem, an ambitious vision, and a need to meet the rapidly growing demands of the population. There is an impressive wealth of home-grown talent who see the scale of the opportunity as a catalyst for disruptive new innovations. In addition, the ongoing need to develop core infrastructure - such as good water and electricity supplies, sanitation, and affordable housing – provides opportunities to tackle issues differently, and to develop solutions that also
have widespread social value at their heart, tapping into vast emerging markets.

There are 28 states in India, each distinct in language, culture, and local governance. To help understand the differences and opportunities better, this programme will include a market visit to cities in two different states – one in the east, and one in the south. Kolkata and Chennai are both metropolitan cities – which bring some similar sustainability and resilience challenges.

Both are also part of the Government of India’s ‘100 Smart Cities’ mission, which has been established to tackle the challenges and opportunities expected over the next 30 years as some 400 million people move into urban environments across India. The Smart Cities Mission funds cities like Chennai and Kolkata to support and implement innovative projects.

India is an important market for Innovate UK, with regular ongoing bilateral R&D, incubator, and innovation activities, all part of building a long-term relationship enabling UK businesses to connect with partners and collaborators to help them grow and scale.

GBIP in Germany, Hydrogen

Why Germany? There has been a huge push to understand the role hydrogen can play in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. As a result, many nations are investing heavily in the innovation and deployment of hydrogen technologies. Germany was quick to establish itself as a world leader in this space by developing a tangible and practical hydrogen strategy that has been supported with major public sector investment. 

The UK has a long history of innovation in hydrogen technologies and our government is also working to incentivise hydrogen deployment. The purpose of this GBIP is to facilitate collaboration between UK and German organisations, as companies in both nations have developed promising solutions to support value chain development and integration.

The GBIP will also play a role in progressing the recent agreement made between Germany and UK to further advance hydrogen developments, helping companies involved to identify ongoing business opportunities associated with this agreement.

The programme will include access to The Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe in Hamburg together with meeting local and leading hydrogen technology organisations.

GBIP in the Netherlands, Quantum Technology 

Why The Netherlands? The Netherlands has world-leading strengths and advanced facilities in quantum technologies, is third in the world for scientific citations in quantum research, and is second for investments in quantum technology per capita.

In 2023, the Netherlands and the UK signed a memorandum of understanding, pledging to further intensify cooperation in quantum technologies. Through its flagship program, Quantum Delta, the Netherlands is investing over €615m in the development of its quantum technologies ecosystem, ranging from strong research hubs to international active start and scale-ups.

Its complementary supply chain and research strengths in photonics, semiconductor and quantum tech are required for the growing quantum tech industry in the UK. 

The programme will also include a visit to the Quantum Meets 2024 conference.

GBIP in Singapore, MedTech and Diagnostics 

Why Singapore? Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 Plan aims to better transform and protect health, advance human potential & create economic value for Singapore. Priorities include transforming and protecting health through (i) shifting the focus towards both health promotion & disease prevention as the population ages (ii) supporting the health system to become more data-driven and patient-centric to deliver value-based care through the innovative use of both technology and digital solutions at scale (iii) using data analytics to support public health actions & telemedicine to deliver quality care to the wider population and (iv) expanding the national precision medicine research programme. A further priority is maximising economic value by growing a vibrant mix of start-ups and scale-ups with a strong translational ecosystem, with a particular focus on biotech companies. 

With the Asia-Pacific Medical Technology (MedTech) market expected to grow to US$225 billion by 2030, Singapore is strategically placed to enable companies to tap into these regional opportunities, and Singapore’s network of top universities, research institutions and innovative start-ups also enable MedTech companies to fully engage with a vibrant open innovation ecosystem. 

Singapore has an advanced digital economy and is consistently ranked as one of the world’s most innovative cities. Building on the strong mutual interest in co-innovation between Singapore and the UK, Enterprise Singapore and Innovate UK will be opening the latest round of their bilateral R&D grant funding call, coinciding with the timing of this GBIP visit to Singapore.

GBIP in Hyderabad and Bangalore, India - Antimicrobial Resistance, diagnostics and therapeutics

Why India? India has recognised the importance of AMR, and the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has established three technical bodies: The Intersectoral Coordination Committee, Technical Advisory Group, and Core Working Group to develop a National Action Plan on AMR (NAP-AMR).

The NAP-AMR, largely modelled on the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) - global action plan on AMR, highlights the crucial need to prevent the development of new resistant organisms, limiting their transmission and further spread as an international issue.

The 5-year NAP-AMR (2017–2021) was intended as a pivotal blueprint for states to develop their own state action plans to tackle AMR. However, only three states out of 28 (0.84% of the country) have established state action plans, namely Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi.

The strategic implementation began in early 2017, determining six strategic fields of activity and objectives that recognise cooperation between different areas, ensuring each one's integrity — a One Health approach. Consequently, there is a significant AMR Ecosystem within India.

The GBIP will include a visit to both Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka and Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana.

These two cities stand out as technology hubs with advanced healthcare infrastructure and a thriving innovation ecosystem. C Camp Bangalore is such an example which operates an initiative supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India, wherein a team of UK and Indian researchers are working together to tackle the rising prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in the environment.

Leveraging the expertise, resources and collaborative networks in these two cities may significantly impact AMR mitigation efforts nationwide and globally.

GBIP in San Jose, California - Engineering Biology & Industrial Biotechnology

Why San Jose, California? The US government has invested in various initiatives and programmes to support the development and application of biotechnology and engineering biology.

Biological applications are estimated to unlock $2 to $4 trillion in annual direct global economic value by 2030, with the health sector being the largest contributor. The UK has a strong life sciences base and a window of opportunity to establish technological leadership and capture economic and societal value from engineering biology.

The programme will include a visit to SynBioBeta - The Global Synthetic Biology Conference. Together with meeting local and leading biotechnology organisations.

Focus areas:

We are looking for businesses that focus on delivering Engineering Biology & translational Industrial Biotechnology solutions including:

• Discovery and application of new bio-engineering principles inspired by the properties of biological systems, ‘cells as factories’
• Use of bio-engineering principles to the design, analysis, construction, automation and manipulation of biological systems
• Synthetic biology, engineering biology, or other innovative and sustainable approaches by ‘design’ e.g., AI & Big Data (genomic & metabolic profiling libraries)

GBIP in South Korea - Advanced Manufacturing

Why South Korea? Manufacturing is the mainstay of the Korean economy, accounting for 25.5% of GDP and 90% of exports. In June 2019, the Korean government announced its “Manufacturing Renaissance Vision” to revitalise the manufacturing industry through innovation and by adopting smart, eco-friendly technologies. In 2022 the sector benefitted from a $1.9 billion investment into R&D smart factory projects.

The government’s roadmap has set out key R&D focus areas including design technology, IIoT platforms, software-integrated operating techniques, smart sensors, robots, data collection and processing technologies. They have committed to create 20 smart industrial zones and 2,000 new AI-powered smart factories by 2030.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has reinforced the government’s plans to help SMEs adopt and expand smart factory technologies, establishing the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Office under the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency and has plans for 10 major sectors to each have 4,500 smart factories by 2025.

With an R&D innovation strategy which focuses on greater investment into SMEs, international collaboration and UK-SK bilateral funding opportunities, this market offers significant opportunity for UK SMEs developing advanced manufacturing technologies.

GBIP in Australia - Critical Mineral uses for the Battery Supply Chain

Why Australia? Australia is well-positioned to be a leading supplier of batteries, critical minerals and crucial rare earth elements to help meet the growing global demand for minerals used in a variety of modern technologies. Australia’s batteries and critical minerals inventory is impressive, and it demonstrates the significant role that Australia plays in the global supply of these critical materials.

The relationship between the UK and Australia is both significant and comprehensive, with closely aligned strategic perspectives, and substantial trade and investment ties through the recently signed Free Trade Agreement, AUKUS, Clean Tech Partnership, etc. Collaborations between the two countries have covered a broad range of interventions and topics including Net Zero.

Focus Themes:

We are inviting applications from innovative companies that possess complementary expertise across the value chain for mid-stream processing of Australian raw materials, which are critical for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy. 

We are interested in companies that are involved in early-stage research for developing new battery and magnet technologies for clean transport and energy.

Additionally, we are looking for technologies that can apply ‘big data’ digital mapping, artificial intelligence (AI), and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles to achieve transparency throughout the EV battery supply chain between the UK and AUS.

This region is quickly becoming a globally recognised hub of oceans expertise with the potential to be a significant contributor to a number of Global Value Chains associated with the oceans sector.

GBIP in Taiwan - Semiconductors

Why Taiwan? Semiconductors are an essential component of the electronic devices that are indispensable and ubiquitous in the world around us, enabling communications, computing, healthcare, military systems, transportation, clean energy, and countless other applications.

The global semiconductor industry is set to become a trillion-dollar industry by 2030, with around 70% of growth predicted to be driven by the automotive, data storage, and wireless industries.

Taiwan dominates the semiconductor foundry industry and manufactures over 60% of the world’s semiconductors and 92% of those that are most advanced.  The sector has a local workforce of 600,000 and makes up 15% of Taiwan’s GDP. Its ecosystem is supported by organisations like the Industrial Technology Research Institute, which plays a crucial role in the growth of Taiwan’s high-tech industry.

With an abundance of cutting-edge technology and clients like Apple, Qualcomm and Nvidia, The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company leads global manufacturing but despite its commanding position the industry is made up of over 1000 SME’s.

GBIP in the USA - Hydrogen

Why the USA? The Hydrogen Americas 2024 Summit & Exhibition in Washington DC will likely include announcements about the distribution of the Department of Energy's hydrogen hub funding and offer networking opportunities with prominent US stakeholders. 

California is home to the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES), a hydrogen hub with federal funding, which pioneers a non-industrial hydrogen market, focusing on renewable hydrogen, biomass conversion, and decarbonising public transport and port operations. The California Hydrogen Leadership Summit is held in California. The California Hydrogen Leadership Summit discusses policies and incentives to boost hydrogen production, usage, and storage, crucial for California's emission targets and goals in climate protection, air quality, energy resilience, and sustainable growth.

Areas of focus include:

Hydrogen use solutions:*

GBIP in Singapore - Clean Maritime

Why Singapore? Singapore is a major international maritime transport hub. The Port of Singapore is currently the world’s second busiest port in terms of container throughput with ship arrival tonnage exceeding 2.8 billion gross tonnes in 2021. Singapore is also one of the world’s leading bunkering hubs, supplying over 50 million tonnes of marine bunker fuel to vessels that ply international shipping routes in 2021.

The Maritime Singapore Decarbonisation Blueprint spearheads a programme of investment to promote clean and green shipping which will bring about new areas of green growth for Singapore in the developments of alternative fuels and green technologies. It prioritises ambitious and long-term strategies that decarbonise all areas of shipping and ports.

Singapore is widely regarded as a gateway to Asia, due to its high GDP per capita and advanced transport and infrastructure technology adoption.  A well-developed financial system, a clearly structured legal framework, and the ease of doing business in English means that Singapore is a highly suitable base to launch technology partnerships across Asia. 

Relations between the UK and Singapore are strong. In 2022 the UK-Singapore Digital Economy Agreement was signed to improve the free flow of trusted data between the UK and Singapore in digital cooperation initiatives.

With a well-established bilateral funding framework, opportunities in Singapore for innovative UK companies developing clean maritime technologies are significant.

GBIP in Boston and New York - FemTech

Why Boston and New York? Boston is one of the leading life science hubs in the world, and has established itself as an early industry-leader in FemTech, with an ecosystem that ranges from well-established start-ups to global companies that are revolutionizing women’s healthcare access. There are also world-renowned academic and medical institutions in Boston, including Mass General Brigham and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, that have been conducting significant research on women-specific issues. In the past, many academic institutions have been eager to collaborate with UK businesses in the health and the life sciences ecosystem, and we expect ample interest in engaging with UK businesses in the FemTech sector. 

New York has established itself as a leader in the US FemTech ecosystem, by fostering a significant amount of start-ups and reproductive care initiatives. New York has also held several FemTech summits and conferences, with the upcoming 2024 FemTech Consumer and Innovation Summit being held in the city. There is a higher concentration of women-led Venture Capitalist firms, and women in leadership roles in investment, that we expect to be intrigued by the UK FemTech delegation that will be visiting.

GBIP in Switzerland - Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

Why Switzerland? Switzerland has recognised the importance of AMR and the Swiss Antibiotic Resistance Strategy (StAR) was created and as a consequence, there is a significant AMR Ecosystem within Switzerland.

The One Health Action Plan 2024-27 of the Strategy Antibiotic Resistance Switzerland (StAR) is being developed with various partners and stakeholders from research, politics, and industry. This is coincidental with the UK developing its next National Plan. Thus, there are clear parallels between the UK and Switzerland.

The 8th AMR Conference will be held in Basel, Switzerland on the 6th and 7th March 2024 focusing on Novel Antimicrobials & AMR Diagnostics. The innovation visit will include access to both days of the conference providing opportunities to hear from world-leading AMR experts, as well as 1-to-1 matchmaking meetings to find new collaborators and partners and to grow your business.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is one of the major threats to global health. Collaboration is critical to bring new technologies to market which presents many opportunities for businesses to be part of the solution.

Why Canada? Canada is home to a vibrant start-up culture and a strong ecosystem of world-leading agriculture and food companies. It is the 5th largest agricultural commodities exporter in the world, with the sector benefitting from an abundant supply of natural resources including diverse plant, animal and marine life.

Earlier this year President Yoon Suk Yeol, as part of the country’s long-term strategy to enhance competitiveness of the domestic battery industry, announced a collaboration with LG Energy Solution Ltd, Samsung SDI Co Ltd and SK on Co, pledging to jointly invest $15.1 billion through to 2030, building factories to produce cutting-edge battery products and manufacture prototype solid-state batteries.

In May 2023 the Swedish government, through Vinnova, the Swedish Innovation Agency, announced a 160 million SEK budget to establish several national clusters for the commercialisation of advanced therapies, such as the Centre for Commercialisation of Regenerative Medicine, CCRM Nordic, which will be located in “GoCo”, Gothenburg’s Health Innovation City. GBIP in South Korea - Hydrogen

Why South Korea? South Korea’s 2019 Hydrogen Economy Roadmap set out the country’s plan to dominate the global hydrogen market with goals to produce 6.2 million fuel cell electric vehicles, 41 thousand hydrogen buses, roll out 1200 refuelling stations and supply 15GW of fuel cells for power generation by 2040.

By February 2023, the country had made significant strides in the adoption of hydrogen technology, with the introduction of 30,000 hydrogen vehicles, 231 hydrogen charging stations, and 893.97 MW of fuel cells for power generation. However, despite these advancements, the expected greenhouse gas reduction targets have not been fully realized.

To ramp up clean hydrogen utilisation the government will establish a hydrogen power generation bidding market, enact legislation for hydrogen business, and introduce a clean hydrogen certification system in 2024.

With the importance of the hydrogen industry gradually emerging local governments are looking to overcome challenges and strengthen their competitiveness through international collaboration and by attracting major hydrogen related projects. 

With a hydrogen economy set to double in size from £9.1 to £17.3 billion in the next 10 years, the opportunities for UK companies developing hydrogen technologies are considerable.

Germany’s planned investments in AI will be increased to €5 billion by 2025 and has commitments to using AI to reach Net Zero goals which will be directly targeted by this GBIP.

This GBIP will complement the German Federal Government’s new agility in research funding with initiatives such as the “Energy efficient AI system” pilot innovation competition. It will build on Innovate UK’s successful AI GBIP with Germany undertaken in 2022.

Dusseldorf is also home to Logistics Summit exhibition and convention for digitalization and innovation in the logistics sector. The Innovation Visit will include access to this important event allowing opportunity to showcase your innovations and meet potential partners.

Why New Zealand? New Zealand boasts a rich heritage of agricultural excellence and a profound commitment to Agri-Tech development, harnessing the synergy of agriculture and technology to pioneer innovative solutions.

Supported by a thriving start-up ecosystem and government policies conducive to growth, New Zealand prioritises collaboration with international partners, expanding reach and leveraging global expertise. The Agritech Industry Transformation Plan (ITP) launched by the New Zealand government in 2020 outlines ambitious plans for the sector's growth, promoting productivity, sustainability, and alignment with a zero-carbon economy. This GBIP will build on strong relationships already established by Innovate UK’s previous Agri-Tech GBIP completed in 2022. 

In 2022 the NZ Government launched the Centre for Climate Action on Agricultural Emissions to promote development of high-impact technologies and practices particularly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 

The Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom and New Zealand signed an agreement in 2022 aimed at enhancing R&D and innovation collaborations between the two markets. Furthermore, the free trade agreement between New Zealand and the United Kingdom is one of the most comprehensive agreements New Zealand has ever concluded.

Why Canada? Canada is home to a vibrant start-up culture and a strong ecosystem of world Leading agriculture and food companies. It is the 5th largest agricultural commodities exporter in the world with the sector benefiting from an abundant supply of natural resources including diverse plant, animal and marine life.

Agri-Tech is a strategic priority for collaboration and was a founding pillar in the MoU signed between DSIT. (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology) and Global Affairs Canada. 

Plant-based protein is a key area of focus for Canada. As part of Canada’s Budget 2022, $150 million was earmarked for Protein Industries Canada (PIC). This builds on the previous $173 million entrusted to Protein Industries Canada, through the Global Innovation Cluster Program to advance innovation in plant-based food and ingredients. Having completed successful programs to Canada in the agri-food sector, Innovate UK is looking to build on promoting collaboration and partnerships. Bilateral funding opportunities are now being developed with the Global Business Innovation Programme being a critical activity to help establish strong collaborations and consortia.

We would welcome applications from companies who are involved in developing innovations to support the plant-based protein sector in (but not limited to) the following areas:

• Ingredients – The development, scaling and optimisation of plant-based ingredients, e.g. oats, beans, peas.

Why Australia? Australia has provided a long-term strategy for the country to achieve net-zero by 2050. Clean hydrogen is predicted to have a huge impact in this area and could be worth more than $50 billion in 2050, representing opportunities for UK businesses to connect, collaborate and capitalise on this growing market.

In July 2021, a letter of intent was signed to make low-emission technologies scalable and commercially viable through the Australia–UK Clean Technology Partnership (CTP). An agreement has been reached to enable a bilateral funding competition associated with the CTP in 2023.

Why Taiwan? Semiconductors are an essential component of the electronic devices that are indispensable and ubiquitous in the world around us, enabling communications, computing, healthcare, military systems, transportation, clean energy, and countless other applications.  The global semiconductor industry is set to become a trillion-dollar industry by 2030, with around 70% of growth predicted to be driven by the automotive, data storage, and wireless industries.

Taiwan is known as the “silicon shield” of the semiconductor industry and manufactures over 60% of the world’s semiconductors and 92% of those that are most advanced.  The sector makes up 15% of Taiwan’s GDP. With an abundance of cutting-edge technology, The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has constructed giant fabrication plants “fabs”, which achieve 95% yields, and dominates semiconductor manufacturing.  Clients include major technology firms such as Apple, Qualcomm and Nvidia.

KPMG estimated the Dutch MedTech market to be worth €4.7bn.

With the European Medicines Agency (EMA) being situated in the Netherlands, it has strengthened the country’s position as the ideal ecosystem in Europe for developing ground-breaking technologies in the field of health. More than 50% of the Dutch Life Sciences and Health companies (in numbers) cooperate with non-Dutch companies or knowledge institutions.

GBIP in India - Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD)

Why India? The Asia Pacific Region is the largest market for power electronics globally and India is one of the key markets for growth due to an increasing demand for electricity consumption, focus on renewables and manufacturing capabilities. India imported $1.8Bn of power electronic devices in FY20/21. India represents an exciting partner for collaboration in this sector to address key challenges in the supply chains for both countries.

Innovate UK is currently working on developing an industrial CR&D funding programme with the Government of India, which is expected to open in early 2023. Ongoing discussions include PEMD as a potential area of bilateral focus, and this GBIP will promote new relationships in the form of B2B collaborations and academic links between the UK and India in this sector.

GBIP Norway - Clean Maritime

Why Norway? Norway is a global leader in maritime de-carbonisation, both in government policy and in delivery. The country’s ocean industry accounts for 70% of its export earnings. The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association have set ambitious Greenhouse gas emissions targets, including cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and only ordering ships capable of running with zero net emissions from 2030.

Norway  has several key projects and solutions for clean maritime already deployed, with a very active ecosystem of businesses, customers, and innovators. Norway has recently built the world’s first liquid hydrogen powered ferry and additional innovative clean vessel designs are gaining approval from classification societies. The country is also leading in electric vessel propulsion, recently launching the world’s largest electric ferry. 

To enable these innovative vessels, Norway is also leading the development of port and offshore bunkering and charging infrastructure.Norway is also a signatory to the Green Shipping Corridors declaration at COP26, alongside the UK. There is great opportunity available for UK-Norway collaboration to develop the vessels and infrastructure required to enable these Green Shipping Corridors.

GBIP in USA (Denver): Clean Growth

Why USA? The US Government has pledged to cut US greenhouse emissions in half by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050. As a result, the US is scaling up the development and deployment of clean energy technologies to build a new clean energy infrastructure and economy.

Colorado is one of the most centrally located areas of the United States and is a national leader in adopting clean energy technologies. The state has one of the highest per capita concentrations of federal science, research, and engineering facilities in the US, including NREL. It was also the first state in the US to pass a voter-approved renewable energy standard, which requires that all investor-owned utilities acquire 30% of their electricity from renewable sources. This major shift towards sustainable energy by both the legislature and the voting public demonstrates Colorado's commitment to clean, renewable energy.

GBIP in New Zealand: Agritech

Innovate UK has launched a Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) to help UK Agri-Tech SMEs pursue growth and innovation opportunities through collaboration with New Zealand peers.

It will help up to 15 innovation-focused UK businesses, who will be developing solutions to common industry challenges such as the need for more efficient and precision farming through robotics and satellite data.

SMEs can apply to the GBIP below and applications close on August 31, 2022.

Why New Zealand?

Investment in R&D by New Zealand’s top 22 Agri-Tech companies is up 6.5% year on year, outlining a focus on innovation for the sector. Larger Agri-Tech and primary industry companies are increasingly working with start-ups to collaborate and solve problems together, which is producing a growing number of new commercial entities.

The New Zealand Government launched its Industry Transformation Plan (ITP). The ITP sets out an approach to the long-term transformation of the Agri-Tech sector to make it more productive and sustainable as part of a zero-carbon economy through support to accelerate growth, attract investment, increase commercialisation and global opportunities, and address data interoperability.

Additional investment of NZ$339 million to support the Agriculture sector to develop and disseminate new technologies in accelerating greenhouse gas mitigations was announced in May 2022.

GBIP Foundation Industries with India

Foundation Industries in India are seeing growing demand for products due to India’s increasing population, expanding market and associated large-scale public-sector investments. Through previous discussions with Indian Foundation Industries, we know similar sustainability challenges are being faced to their UK counterparts. To enable collaborative innovation on this topic, UKRI is working with the Department for Science and Technology in India on a bilateral funding opportunity in the near future. This will enable businesses attending this GBIP to meet with potential project partners. 

For this GBIP we are looking for: businesses that focus on delivering sustainability solutions for the foundation industries in India and UK SMEs in the Foundation Industries. Solutions we are looking to focus on include:

• Enabling technologies - digital solutions, sensors and controls, heat recovery systems, value added processes for waste streams specific to the Foundation Industries
• New business models for the Foundation Industries
• New and efficient production processes for the Foundation Industries 
• New supply chain models for the Foundation Industries

GBIP in USA: Battery Technologies

Why USA? The US Government has committed to a 100% clean energy electricity grid by 2035 and a net zero transport sector by 2050. As a key enabling technology, global battery demand and manufacturing capacity is forecast to accelerate, with investment into manufacturing capacity running into the tens of billions of dollars in the US alone. 

In Executive Order 14017: America’s Supply Chains: Supply Chains for High-Capacity Batteries, the Biden Administration set out some key goals that includes:

• create an estimated 450GWh of battery demand 
• 10+ TWh of dispatchable energy storage to achieve net zero 
• invest in mineral specific strategies
• establish a National Recovery and Recycling policy. 

In the revised Atlantic Charter issued in June 2021, there was a commitment to strengthen science and technology collaboration between the UK and the US, including on batteries. Research into and development of next generation batteries is a high priority.

GBIP in India:  Digital Manufacturing

Why India? The pandemic has played a big part in accelerating digital adoption for businesses in India. This rapid change, combined with the Indian Government’s ambition to make India a global manufacturing hub, presents major opportunities in the digital manufacturing space. The sector ecosystem is also supported by programmes and schemes such as Make in India, Digital India and Startup India.

This initiative is relevant for businesses in the advanced manufacturing sector, focused on delivering digital manufacturing solutions, such as:

Digital design for sustainable product development
Industrial digital technologies for process efficiency and productivity optimisation
Predictive maintenance (PdM), condition monitoring, inspection, and testing
Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and data technologies
Robotics and automation
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and connected factories 
Augmented Reality (AR) & Virtual Reality (VR)

The programme will include a visit to Pune (the manufacturing, industrial and educational hub of India and 2nd largest city in Maharashtra), and Bengaluru (innovation and startup hub and capital of Karnataka). Both cities have well-developed innovation communities and ecosystems for digital manufacturing:

Pune has four universities, 200 colleges and several Industrial parks such as Hinjewadi IT park and IndoSpace. Bengaluru is home to some of the largest heavy engineering industries backed-up with a strong IT, R&D and startup ecosystem.  These areas of interest identified reflect the opportunities for participation and joint working relationships between the UK and India, and support the wider work in both cities by other parts of the UK government innovation ecosystem.

GBIP in South Korea: Smart Cities

South Korea ranked first in the Bloomberg Index of Most Innovative Nations 2021 and is home to global leading electronics and IT companies such as Samsung, LG Electronics and Naver. For over two decades South Korea has been embracing its cutting-edge technology infrastructure and is exploiting its superfast internet speeds to solve urban problems and improve quality of life by applying smart and disruptive technologies to cities. Having invested in exemplary smart city projects it is now turning its ambitious vision into realistic plans.

In November 2021 the country’s Transport Ministry announced a $215 million investment to establish 64 local smart city platforms by 2025 and put local citizens at the heart of creating tailor-made next-generation city infrastructure.  

With an established National Strategic Smart City Programme, renowned smart city projects in Seoul and Sejong, a reputation for high R&D investment and international collaboration, this is a market which offers significant opportunity for ambitious UK companies developing technologies that solve net zero city challenges and support sustainable urban development.

GBIP in Germany or Canada: Artificial Intelligence

Innovative businesses are invited to apply for only one of these programmes in Germany or Canada.

Each programme consists of a preparation phase, a five-day innovation visit focussed on Artificial Intelligence (AI) that includes a post-visit exploitation workshop and support for approximately 12 months from an Innovate UK Business Growth Innovation and Growth Specialist.

Why Germany? In 2018, the German government published the German AI Strategy, with an associated budget of €5 billion until 2025, which outlined the progress made in AI and the future goals of the sector. As part of the 2020 update, sustainability and international outreach is placed at the heart of new initiatives offering significant opportunities for UK companies.

Why Canada? In 2017, Canada was the first country in the world to announce a national strategy for AI with a multi-million-dollar investment supporting R&D, skills, talent attraction and retention. The country has a strong foundation in AI and a thriving start-up ecosystem. The Canadian government has also developed a series of initiatives to engage the private sector and advanced the innovation agenda, including the AI Innovation Super cluster Initiative.

GBIP in Portugal: Eureka

Why Portugal? This GBIP will include a visit to Portugal and attendance at the EUREKA Global Innovation Summit 2022 held in Estoril. It builds on the UK’s 35 years of collaborative innovation with Portugal through the EUREKA initiative, with over 600 UK and 200 Portuguese research projects collectively worth over €1.3B supported in that time. Portugal’s 3 per cent of GDP spend on R&D, and the commitment to a 45% to 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050 makes the country a key partner. The Global Innovation Summit 2022 offers a unique possibility for selected businesses to network, exchange ideas, and develop business opportunities with businesses and other organisations from Portugal as well as over 45 other countries which are part of the EUREKA network.

GBIP in India: Urban Systems

Over the next 30 years, some 400 million people are expected to move into urban environments across India. This presents major opportunities and challenges which are captured in part by the Government of India's 100 Smart Cities mission.

The vision is bold and far-reaching, striving to promote core infrastructure elements in large urban areas such as good water and electricity supplies, sanitation and affordable housing.

This initiative to India is relevant to businesses focusing on delivering net zero solutions that address:

GBIP in China: Healthy Ageing

This programme aims to facilitate collaboration between UK and China for the development of motor function technology and the adaptation of urban environments to support healthy ageing.

It forms part of the Healthy Ageing Flagship Challenge Programme (FCP) delivered by the UK’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) - a joint UK-China strategic initiative to support cutting-edge research and innovation partnerships that address global challenges.

With a rapidly ageing society, China presents many opportunities for innovative businesses to develop new products and services that will support senior citizens.

GBIP in Canada: Biomanufacturing of Advanced Therapies

This programme aims to foster bilateral development and collaboration between the UK and Canada, in the area of Biomanufacturing of Advanced Therapies. It follows a successful, virtual inward visit from Canadian biomanufacturing companies and centres of research & commercialisation excellence in 2021.

There are three phases, one of which is an innovation visit to Toronto and Vancouver, both cities with excellent ecosystems in biomanufacturing. Toronto hosts 9 teaching and 23 affiliated hospitals and benefits from being in the heart of MaRS Discovery District, Toronto’s urban innovation hub. Vancouver is home to leading academic institutions hosting spin outs and incubators.
  
This programme is particularly relevant for businesses working in the manufacture of cell therapies such as stem cell, natural killer cells, T-cell and other engineered cell therapies; gene therapies using viral and non-viral vectors; vaccine manufacturing; and regenerative medicine.

GBIP in Canada: Ocean Technology

Canada has become a world leader in engineering products and services suited to extreme harsh ocean environments, marine remote sensing technologies, and ocean observing systems. Atlantic Canada and Nova Scotia, in particular, is home to a strong cluster of ocean industries and to ground breaking ocean research. This region is quickly becoming a globally recognised hub of oceans expertise with the potential to be a significant contributor to a number of Global Value Chains associated with the oceans sector.

GBIP in South Korea: Hydrogen

WHY SOUTH KOREA?

South Korea’s 2019 Hydrogen Economy Road map sets out the country’s plan to dominate the global hydrogen market with goals to produce 6.2 million fuel cell electric vehicles, 41 thousand hydrogen buses, roll out over one thousand re-fuelling stations and supply 15GW of fuel cells for power generation by 2040.

Further investment was announced by President Moon Jae-in with Korea’s “2020 Green New Deal” endorsing the country’s aim to achieve sustainable economic recovery by promoting a green transition in infrastructure and low carbon de-centralised energy supply.

The City of Ulsan, home to automotive giant Hyundai, is projected to attract $4.8 billion in hydrogen investments by 2030 and aims to become the largest Hydrogen Hub in Northeast Asia.

Benefitting from a free trade agreement with the UK and with a hydrogen economy set to double in size from £9.1 to £17.3 billion in the next 10 years, South Korea offers significant opportunities for UK companies developing hydrogen technologies.
