Bristol-based technology business CameraForensics has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. The firm has benefited from Innovate UK grants and its global growth has been supported by Enterprise Europe Network,.

The award recognises the company’s work in helping law enforcement agencies to detect and prevent online crime – particularly child sexual exploitation.

CameraForensics, founded in 2011, has developed an open source tool that trawls the internet and image databases to provide intelligence to investigators working in child victim identification.

It is used by Law Enforcement Agencies in the UK, North America, Europe and Australasia.

Global Business Innovation programme

In 2018 CameraForensics joined a Global Business Innovation programme visit to Israel organised by EEN to meet potential partners and to attend Cybertech Tel Aviv, the most important cyber technologies event outside of the US.

The firm’s image analysis technology is capable of searching both the internet and image databases to provide intelligence to investigators.

When faced with terabytes of media, they can automatically prioritise the relevance of the imagery to a case and determine which images to focus on.

Faster victim identification

The system proactively alerts investigators to new digital evidence leads and to fresh intelligence on unsolved cases.

That vital information and cross-border cooperation results in faster victim identification and higher numbers of convictions.

Founder Matt Burns said: “It’s an honour to receive a Queen’s Award. Our core mission is to help law enforcement safeguard more victims of child sexual exploitation. We hope exposure from this prestigious accolade will help us to continue achieving that.”

Commercial Director Dave Ranner added: “Our whole team is very excited to receive this award. We are a company of technology innovators, but our inspiration comes from our users and collaborators around the world who take the tools that we develop and use them to safeguard children.”
